Thinking Exchanges
The Starting Line
You didn't leave to become an ex.
“Ex-corporate” sounds like a subtraction. It isn't. It's a starting line.

The world hands you a prefix that sounds like past tense — ex-corporate, ex-CEO, ex-employee — as if the most interesting thing about you is what you no longer are. But listen to what that prefix actually means. Ex- is Latin for out of, and by extension beyond. Out of the box. Out of the building. Outward.
Experience and expertise — the raw material and the refined product of every portfolio — both begin with it. So does exodus, which is what the workforce is staging. So does expedition, which is what you're mounting. So does excavate: Chip Conley's charge to midlifers to excavate your essence, and dig out what the job descriptions buried.
You didn't leave to become an ex. You left to become exponential.
This piece is drawn from The Starting Line, a chapter of the PXO Manifesto. The whole argument runs to ten chapters and takes about twenty-five minutes.
